How to host an Eid party at home

An Eid party at home is open-door hosting: family, neighbours and friends, more food than the table holds, and children everywhere. There are no vendors to book, so the plan is to invite early, share the cooking, decorate two days ahead and give the children their moment before the food.

Tips from the plan

Invite early, and by household
Eid is the busiest visiting day of the year and families go to several homes. Send invites three to four weeks out and count replies by household so the cooking is right.
Share the cooking with a sign-up
Open it two weeks ahead. Everyone has a dish they're known for, and a list stops the table filling with sheer khurma and nothing savoury.
Put the lights and décor up two days ahead
Lanterns, lights and the table are easier in an empty house. Leave party day for the kitchen.
Give the children's Eidi a time
About half an hour after guests arrive, before the food. It gathers everyone in one room and it's the part the children came for.

Questions

How far in advance should I plan an Eid party?

Four to six weeks. The date depends on the moon, so plan for the expected day and tell guests it may move by one. Invite at four weeks, open the dish sign-up at two, lock the headcount a week out and decorate two days before.

What food should I serve at an Eid party?

A spread people can come back to: a couple of starters, biryani or another rice dish, a curry with breads, a chaat counter and sweets with chai to finish. Keep it halal, and ask guests about allergies on the invite.

How much does an Eid party cost?

It varies with the headcount, but about half goes on food and drinks and a fifth on decorations and lights. Plates and supplies, an activity for the children and a buffer take the rest. Sharing the cooking lowers the food share a lot.

What's a good schedule for an Eid party?

Four hours: guests arrive, Eidi and greetings about half an hour in, food at the hour mark, then sweets, games and music for the rest of the evening.
