How to plan a temple trip or pilgrimage with family

A pilgrimage is planned backwards from the darshan ticket. At the busy temples those open about three months ahead and are gone within hours, so the first job is weeks before anyone thinks about packing: be ready on the day booking opens, then gather everyone's ID for the rooms and the travel.

The countdown

    • Book temple or nearby rooms
  4. 6 weeks before

    • Confirm who's coming and agree the budget

Tips from the plan

Book darshan the day tickets open
Often ninety days ahead. Every other booking hangs off the slot you get, so this is the one date in the plan that can't slip.
Have every pilgrim's ID in hand
Room and travel bookings ask for each person's ID, and the original is checked at the gate. Collect them all ten weeks out, so no booking is held up by one missing card.
Plan for the elders
Ask about wheelchair or senior-citizen entry two weeks ahead, carry a folding stool and water for the queue, and book rooms close enough that nobody faces a long walk before dawn.

What should I pack for a temple trip?

Original photo ID, traditional clothes for darshan, a shawl, slip-on footwear, personal medicines and a charger. For the group: printed bookings, snacks and water for the queue, small cash for offerings, a first-aid kit and a folding stool for elders.
