How to plan a New Year's Eve party
A New Year's Eve party has the only deadline that can't move. The plan is a house party's plan arranged around one minute: start late enough that people are still going at midnight, feed them early, and have the drinks, the music and the countdown ready before anyone looks at the clock.

Tips from the plan
- Start late
- Nine o'clock puts food at ten, games at eleven and midnight at the top of the last hour. Start at seven and the room is flagging by half past ten.
- Serve the food in the first hour or so
- People arrive having eaten lightly. Put the food out about an hour in and keep something to pick at on the table until midnight.
- Test the speaker with the playlist on it
- Three days ahead, on the speaker you'll actually use, with the countdown track queued. Bluetooth pairing is not a job for five to midnight.
- Tell the neighbours
- Two days before, with the time you expect to finish. It's the one night they expect noise, and the one night it runs latest.
Questions
What time should a New Year's Eve party start?
Around nine. A four-hour party from nine has guests arriving with drinks, food at ten, games at eleven and midnight leading straight into music and dancing, with an hour left to wind down.
How much should I spend on a New Year's Eve party?
Plan on about 40% for food and 30% for drinks, with the rest on music and games, decorations, plates and a buffer. Drinks are the line that runs over, so buy them first.
How many drinks do I need for New Year's Eve?
Three drinks a guest is the usual planning number, plus something to toast with at midnight and plenty of non-alcoholic options and ice.
What do you do at a New Year's Eve party before midnight?
Games carry the hour before the countdown best: cards, charades or a quiz of the year. Plan them a week out so there's no dead stretch at eleven.
